BAM15 Is a Mitochondrial Uncoupler
BAM15 is a small synthetic molecule, not a peptide. It belongs to a class of compounds called mitochondrial uncouplers, also known as protonophores. To understand what that means, it helps to know how mitochondria make energy: they pump protons across their inner membrane, then let those protons flow back through an enzyme that produces ATP. An uncoupler gives protons another path back across the membrane, so the energy is released as heat instead of being captured as ATP.
Why it stands out
Older uncouplers, such as 2,4-dinitrophenol, also affect the outer cell membrane and have a narrow margin between effect and toxicity in experimental systems. BAM15 was identified in a screen for uncouplers that act on mitochondria without depolarizing the plasma membrane, which is the main reason it attracted research interest.
In the Literature
Since its description in the mid-2010s, BAM15 has been studied in cultured cells, where researchers measure oxygen consumption and mitochondrial membrane potential, and in mouse models. Mouse studies have looked at energy expenditure, fat accumulation in diet-based models, insulin sensitivity and markers of liver fat. Results depend strongly on the model, so the references below are the place to compare specific methods. It is also worth noting how each group measured energy expenditure, since techniques such as indirect calorimetry and respirometry can produce different kinds of data.
BAM15 Capsules
Refresh Research offers BAM15 only as capsules:
- Strength: 500 mcg per capsule
- Count: 60 capsules per container
- Container total: 30 mg
As a small molecule, it needs no reconstitution. Keep capsules sealed and dry, away from heat.
Reviewing the Test Report
Look up BAM15 on our COA / Lab Reports page and open the certificate that matches the lot number on your container. Confirm that it identifies BAM15 and shows the labeled per-capsule amount.
Strictly for laboratory research.
